What happens to my Netflix account when I die?

Nothing changes on its own — billing keeps running until someone cancels it, and Netflix's process splits cleanly depending on whether you can log in. If you (or whoever's handling the account) have the login, Netflix's guidance is simple: sign in and "Click the Cancel Membership link on the Account page," the same as canceling for any other reason. Source

Without login access, Netflix asks you to gather the email address or phone number tied to the account and the payment method currently used to pay for it, then contact Netflix support directly so an agent can process the cancellation. Netflix's help article does not describe a separate, formal "deceased member" documentation process (no mention of a death certificate requirement on this particular page) — the mechanism described is closer to a standard account-recovery-and-cancel flow than the death-certificate-and-court-order process PayPal, Venmo, and LinkedIn use.

Netflix does not describe transferring the account, its viewing history, or "My List" to another person; the described outcome is cancellation, full stop.

What we could not verify: whether Netflix has a separate, more formal bereavement process beyond what this specific help article describes (some other platforms maintain two tiers — self-service and a documented estate process — and Netflix's public documentation on this exact scenario is thinner than PayPal's, Venmo's, or LinkedIn's). If a death certificate or estate paperwork is required in practice for accounts you can't access at all, that requirement isn't stated on the page we could retrieve.

We are CairnVault. We build an encrypted digital-legacy plan — your family can open it when you die, and nobody, including us, can read it while you are alive. So we are not a neutral party on this subject, which is precisely why every claim above links to somebody else's documentation rather than to ours.

If we have got something wrong, tell us — we correct the text and record the correction with a date. We have already had to retract several claims from our own earlier materials.
